Purpose

Responsible for operations for all PGM related milling activities. Participates in or oversees projects of various sizes and scopes as requested by the Mill Superintendent. Responsibility for production and execution of the annual operating plan for the Mill Department. Authority for disciplining employees within the operations group 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for development, monitoring and improvement of safety performance for all employees working in the mill, crushing plants, and tailing facilities. 
  • Responds to emergency situations and unusual operating conditions to ensure the safety of personnel and limit potential negative impacts on production and costs. 
  • Responsible for ensuring the mill, crushing plants, and tailing facilities remain in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act. 
  • Responsible for maintaining a high standard of housekeeping in all areas within the mill, and crushing plant authorities. 
  • Responsible for ensuring the fire extinguishers are checked monthly in the designated area for their crew. 
  • Promotes and supports the utilization of the Unsafe Condition program, incident reporting and accident investigations. Ensures timely follow-up and implementation of corrective measures.  
  • Conducts meaningful and informative safety meetings for each crew monthly. 
  • Ensures quick follow-up to safety issues that are identified through Occupational Health and Safety Act and Supervisory tours.  
  • Conducts daily safety huddles and information exchange meetings with employees at the start of each shift. 
  • Ensures and enforces safe job procedures for all employees and contractors working in the mill areas.   
  • Supervises operations bargaining unit employees. Sets objectives, reviews performance, schedules vacation, and records employees’ time on the computer payroll system.
  • Provides leadership and direction for mill and crusher production crews.  
  • Participates in the hiring process for bargaining unit employees within the department to ensure that new hires have the skills, qualifications and competencies required of them to become a contributing member of the mill team. 
  • Coordinates with the training department to ensure operations personnel are trained according to the requirements of the CBA and as special needs arise. 
  • Responsible and accountable for achieving production targets and ensuring maximum utilization of mill, crushing, and tailing related processes. 
  • Liases with open pit and underground mine departments to ensure a consistent ore supply. 
  • Responsible for coordinating required daily work and establishing priorities with maintenance personnel to ensure minimal interruptions to the operation. 
  • Responsible for ensuring any contractor brought in by themselves are used to full advantage, following company procedures, and a contractor notification form filled out each time contractors are brought on site. 
  • Works closely with Maintenance Planners to plan, schedule and provide guidance for operational requirements and duties, as well as shutdown preparation, for scheduled shutdowns. 
  • Participates in improvement programs, modifications to mill equipment, procedures, and policies to improve safety, increase throughput and reduce costs.   
  • Works closely with the metallurgical group on optimization initiatives for recovery and reagent consumptions.  Responsible for ensuring that mill employees adhere to changes in these areas. 
  • Responsible for the operation and monitoring of the tailing disposal and effluent treatment facilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Initiates corrective action when required. 
  • Responsible for mill mobile equipment availability by ensuring the equipment is maintained and operated according to recommended practices and procedures. 
  • Responsible for updating the daily production summary and statistics spreadsheet. 
  • Responsible for the recovery of 3 bags of carbon fines a week. 


Training and Education

  • Minimum Secondary School Graduation Diploma (Grade 12) 
  • Minimum 5 years milling and crushing experience. 
  • Must have demonstrated leadership skills 
  • Must be computer literate 
  • Must have effective communications skills 
  • A solid background in the operation of crushing and grinding plants, tailing management, and effluent treatment. 
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to motivate others and initiate change that yields positive results in terms of safety, the environment, production and cost management in the mill area. 
  • A solid knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants is essential. 



Compensation and Benefits
Competitive total compensation package including:

  • Annual total compensation of CAD$139,895 to CAD$172,811 (including annual bonus eligibility).
