Purpose
This role is responsible for the financial governance, reporting, and analysis of capital projects across a group of mine sites. It ensures accurate capital accounting, consistent application of IFRS and internal capital policies, and timely reporting of project performance. Key responsibilities include reviewing capital project expenditures, validating project coding and classifications, owning the AFE process in the ERP, monitoring project progress against budgets, preparing consolidated capital reports, supporting capital planning cycles, and ensuring compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements. You will also promote Discovery values and ensure compliance and enforcement of its rules and business principles.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the monthly capital accounting cycle for all assigned mine sites, including review of project costs, accruals, and asset classifications.
- Prepare consolidated capital expenditure reporting and analysis across multiple operations, highlighting variances, risks, and opportunities for site and corporate stakeholders.
- Support annual and multi‑year capital planning processes at the site level, ensuring alignment with long‑range mine plans and corporate capital frameworks.
- Review and validate capital project requests (AFEs) for financial accuracy, proper categorization, and compliance with internal approval requirements.
- Owner of the AFE process within the ERP system.
- Collaborate with project managers, and site finance personnel to monitor project progress, validate cost estimates, and support investment analysis.
- Maintain strong internal controls related to capital accounting, including asset recognition, depreciation setup, and adherence to IFRS and corporate accounting policies.
- Reconcile the Fixed Asset reports and work with the Corporate team to ensure accurate consolidation for external reporting.
- Assist with internal and external audits related to capital projects, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
- Ensure all provincial, federal, legal, corporate, and professional regulations and standards are met.
- Promote and uphold company regulations and policies, particularly regarding health, safety, and ethical business conduct.
Training and Education
- University degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience, with direct exposure to mining operations or capital project accounting.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS, particularly asset capitalization and project accounting standards.
- Experience with capital budgeting, forecasting, project controls, and financial analysis.
- Ability to analyze complex data, solve problems, and think critically.
- Advanced computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and SAP
- Strong communication skills (verbal, written, listening) with the ability to collaborate across multiple sites and functions.
- Well organized with the ability to manage competing deadlines and high‑volume reporting cycles.
- Experience supporting or working with project teams is an asset
