Purpose
The purpose of the Field Trainer is to support a safe, competent, and compliant workforce by delivering high-quality, practical training and conducting thorough competency assessments. This role ensures that all employees and contractors are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely and effectively, in alignment with site procedures, legal requirements, and the principles of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS). The Field Trainer serves as a key resource for supervisors, workers, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), promoting a strong safety culture and contributing to the continuous improvement of the training program and overall operational performance.
Responsibilities
Training Delivery and Competency Assessment
- Conduct training sessions and assessments in accordance with site standards, Common Core requirements, in-house specialties, and induction programs.
- Provide practical and theoretical training to workers, ensuring alignment with current safe operating procedures and company's safety initiatives.
- Accredit employees upon successful completion of training and maintain due diligence in training documentation.
Program Development and Support
- Assist in the development and continuous improvement of training programs and materials.
- Participate in the development, communication, and implementation of new or revised mine procedures.
- Identify training gaps or deficiencies and recommend improvements to enhance the training program.
Regulatory Compliance and Record Keeping
- Ensure training activities comply with applicable legislation, collective bargaining agreements (CBA), and internal job profiles.
- Maintain accurate training records and forward completed competency reports to the Safety & Training Supervisor for accreditation and filing.
- Monitor the workplace to verify that employees and contractors are properly trained or are actively undergoing training and accreditation.
IRS and Safety Culture Promotion
- Educate all levels of the organization on the principles of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and actively promote its implementation.
- Support and participate in PGM safety initiatives, including programs such as the 5-Point Safety System.
- Actively attend safety meetings and contribute as a presenter or observer where applicable.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a resource to all workplace parties, including supervisors, workers, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to gather and share up-to-date training information and best practices.
- Advise supervisors and workers on the safety and regulatory content of training materials.
Additional Duties
- Assist in the testing and verification of new equipment (e.g., brake testing) to ensure compliance with site standards prior to deployment.
- Assist In-House Trainers and provide support in field-based training activities.
- Participate in accident investigations where training may have been a contributing factor.
Training and Education
- Minimum Grade 12 education; post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or related field preferred
- Valid Ontario G driver’s license
- Minimum 2 years of underground experience
- Minimum 2 years of Occupational Health & Safety experience in mining or heavy industry
- Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulation 854 for Mines and Mining Plants
- Strong planning, documentation, and follow-up skills
- Frequent field presence is required to support workplace observations, hands-on training, and equipment assessments.
- May be required to work underground or in surface operations depending on training needs
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive total compensation package including:

- Company contributions and matching into a Defined Contribution Pension Plan; and
- Annual total compensation of CAD$123,432 to CAD$152,475 (including annual bonus eligibility).
