Purpose

The Safety Advisor supports operational excellence by promoting a proactive safety culture and ensuring all workplace parties fulfill their roles under the Internal Responsibility System (IRS). This position facilitates risk reduction through leadership in hazard identification, training, emergency preparedness, and compliance with Ontario’s mining regulations. The Safety Advisor plays a critical role in ensuring high safety performance and continuous improvement across the operation.

Responsibilities
  
Safety and Risk Prevention 

  • Conduct site inspections and audits to ensure regulatory compliance and identify unsafe conditions or behaviors and make recommendations to reduce exposure 
  • Coordinate safety-related programs and support hazard reduction initiatives 
  • Monitor and improve the effectiveness of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) 
  • Support incident investigations 
  • Review and improve hazard mitigation for high-risk activities 
  • Support risk assessments for non-routine or high-risk work activities 
  • Provide regular safety performance updates and recommend corrective actions to leaders  
  • Act as a technical resource for health and safety matters for all employees and the JHSC 
  • Liaise with industry partners, safety networks (e.g., WSN), and regulators to stay informed on evolving safety standards 
  • Support development and review safe work procedures  

 
Contractor and Change Management 

  •  
  • Support contractor safety orientation, oversight, and performance monitoring to ensure safety standards are met 
  • Participate in Management of Change (MOC) reviews to assess safety impacts of equipment, process, or staffing changes 
  • Assist in safety-by-design processes for infrastructure and operational changes 

 
Training and Competency 

 
  • Promote education and understanding of the IRS and site-specific safety procedures 
  • Collaborate with the Training Specialist and/or Field Trainer to ensure training programs are compliant, effective and job-relevant  
  • Validate training records and certifications to ensure legal and operational readiness 
  • Observe job tasks to assess and support worker competency development 
  • Provide field-based coaching, mentoring, and feedback on safe work practices 

 
Emergency Preparedness 

  • Support the development and implementation of department emergency procedures  
  • Ensure an adequately trained compliment of Underground Mine Rescue or Emergency Response personnel 
  • Promote First Aid Training 
  • Review and update the emergency preparedness program as necessary 

 
Data, Reporting and Communication 

  • Develop and distributed safety performance reports using both leading and lagging indicators 
  • Support the implementation and use of digital safety tools (eg, inspection apps, dashboards) 
  • Communicate safety messages across shifts and departments in a clear and engaging manner 
  • Participate in safety meetings, pre-start meetings and leadership tours to promote visibility 


Training and Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 education; post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or related field preferred 
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license 
  • Minimum 5 years of mining (surface, mill, or underground) experience 
  • Minimum 5 years of Occupational Health & Safety experience in mining or heavy industry 
  • Minimum 3 years in a leadership, advisory, or training capacity 
  • Accreditation in the Supervisory Common Core 
  • Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulation 854 for Mines and Mining Plants 
  • Familiarity with WHMIS, mine rescue, industrial hygiene, and safety auditing 
  • Experience working with training management systems and safety analytics tools 
  • Strong planning, documentation, and follow-up skills 



Compensation and Benefits
Competitive total compensation package including:

  • Company contributions and matching into a Defined Contribution Pension Plan; and
  • Annual total compensation of CAD$117,554 to CAD$145,214 (including annual bonus eligibility).
