Purpose

The mandate of the Geotechnical Engineer is to provide engineering support to the U/G operations by providing the tools and knowledge required to maintain a safe and productive working environment, with specific regard to ground control requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Review and ensure compliance with ground control related regulations, policies and standards 
  • Review and if required revise ground control requirements and procedures 
  • As required, respond rapidly to ground control issues and failures at the operating mines. Complete appropriate reporting and initiate action plans that will remove potential future hazards both in the affected area and similar areas.
  • Take a proactive role in assessing ground control risks at the operations and put systems into place that will mitigate risk to manageable/safe levels.
  • Application of geomechanics techniques
  • Perform detailed stress modeling of active and planned underground stoping to ensure optimum recovery, stability and mine sequencing.
  • Apply empirical design tools to evaluate and optimize mine design.
  • Work with geology department to optimize collection and interpretation of geotechnical data.


Training and Education

  • A Master of Science in Mining Engineering or equivalent engineering degree, specializing in Rock Mechanics. Alternatively, a Bachelor degree in Mining Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) with substantial practical experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of mine operation and engineering experience.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a leadership role.
  • Be technically competent and have a good understanding of basic Rock Mechanics and Ground Control principles, assessment techniques, remedial methods, instrumentation and products.
  • Have strong communication and people skills.
  • Be focused, clear, and decisive.
  • Able to work closely with operations, geology, environmental, project departments.
  • Ability to use and interpret specialized geomechanics modeling software.


Compensation and Benefits
Competitive total compensation package including:

  • Company contributions and matching into a Defined Contribution Pension Plan; and
  • Annual total compensation of CAD$132,854 to CAD$164,114 (including annual bonus eligibility).
