Purpose
Reporting to the Health, Safety and Security Manager, the Safety Superintendent is responsible for assisting with the planning and alignment of workplace safety activities across all of the Porcupine Gold Mine properties, with direct control of the site’s surface Emergency Response program. The role provides senior, field-focused leadership to ensure regulatory compliance, effective risk management, and continuous improvement of safety systems.
Responsibilities
- Actively collaborate with operations, maintenance, training, occupational health, and security teams to integrate safety and emergency response into business planning and execution.
- Lead implementation and ongoing improvement of safety management systems, programs, and procedures – particularly as the relate to controlling change management.
- Advise and support senior leadership, managers, supervisors, and workers on all aspects of workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
- Provide overall accountability and functional leadership for the Surface Emergency Response Team (ERT).
- Develop, maintain, and implement surface Emergency Response Plans, including fire, medical, rescue, hazardous materials, confined space, fall arrest and rescue, and high-risk task response.
- Interface and coordinate with Underground Mine Rescue and underground emergency response leadership as required
- Participate in, and facilitate where required, incident investigations and risk assessments.
- Promote learning from incidents and emergency events across the operation.
- Provide technical expertise and leadership on safety and emergency response related projects and initiatives.
- Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, with internal and external stakeholders, regulators, and emergency response agencies.
Training & Education
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Emergency Management, Mining, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 8–10 years of progressive experience in mining or heavy industrial operations.
- 5+ years of leadership experience in safety, emergency response, or operational roles.
- Demonstrated experience leading or managing surface emergency response and preparedness programs. (firefighting, hazardous materials, rescue, advanced first aid).
- Incident investigation and root-cause analysis training.
- Ontario JHSC certification & demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act / Regulations.
- Ontario Mine Rescue certification (or previous certification) strongly preferred
- CRSP or equivalent professional designation considered an asset.
