Purpose
A track maintenance job involves inspecting, repairing, and maintaining railroad tracks to ensure their safety and efficiency. Responsibilities include replacing worn rails, ties, and ballast, clearing debris, and using hand and power tools to fix minor and major track defects. These roles often require physical labor.
- Is responsible for their health and safety as well as others.
- Will correct or report unsafe practices or conditions.
- Maintains a safe and healthy place to work.
- Make suggestions to improve any aspect of safety and correct issues wherever possible.
- Will understand and follow Discovery’s policies and procedures as outlined in the FRM handbook.
- Learns and follows the safety rules and procedures for safe performance of the job.
Responsibilities
- Inspecting and repairing: Inspect tracks to identify and report damaged or broken components like rails, ties, and spikes.
- Replacing parts: Work as part of a crew to replace worn or broken rails, ties, and spikes.
- Ballast maintenance: Spread, level, and tamp ballast (the gravel bed) around ties and rails using specialized equipment.
- Switch maintenance: Repair and maintain switches, and other track components.
- Emergency response: Work to restore tracks in response to production requirements, such as repairing damage from wear and tear.
- Equipment operation: Operate various machines and equipment for tasks like laying, maintaining, and repairing tracks.
- Safety and upkeep: Ensure a safe work area, operate equipment to standard, and maintain tools
